Hi. I am travelling from the UK and heading straight to Cuzco 6th August to do the Inca Trail but have no idea what to wear. Can we wear shorts, or are long trousers required? Will we need warm clothing at night? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
I'd plan for both types of weather. I was there in May and the days were nice and hot, but yes, at high altitude the nights can get quite cold. My recommendation would be to have a quality sleeping bag, or rent one from your guide company. That was really the only complaint I heard from people ~ they got cold at night. You should probably have some sort of raingear as well. If you have booked through a tour company, they more than likely will have a list of reccomended things to bring.
Have fun, it's a spectacular experience.
During the day i wore mr zip off combats, they are awesome and quick removing them when it gets hot, and when the weather isnt that great they are the right thing i thought to wear.
I carried my own bag, with gortex paclite jacket, and waterproof trousers if it rains. I found wearing my helly hanson thermal was really good as it kept you warm at night but during the day took sweat from your skin so it evaporated quickly (even if it smelt at night!)
It did get very cold on the first and second nights i thought, very! even i my sleeping bag with clothes on!
One word of advice, make sure you go for a large bruno before setting off, the toilets are absolutely MANK!!!!
