Planning to travel from Cartagena down the panamericana to Quito Equador by bus. Wich places are unsafe and sould I avoid and wich places souldnt I miss. What is the general security situation on this route and is it safe by bus?
Any other colombia info advise would be welcome aswell.
I cannot answer your question but I was in Cartagena for 5 days Feb this year before heading for Bogota and I had to force myself to leave Cartagena as the people where so friendly and their was lots of Travellers staying for a few days so its a must place to go.
I dont think you will have any problems on the Panamerican to Quito as its a well travelled route and Lonely Planet South America will guide you safely onwards.
Have a great trip and wishing you well.

I was just in Colombia in May, and the bus travel was very good (except they blasted the AC so cold I could not sleep one night!) Bring a blanket for the bus, and it should not be a problem. Bus travel is a bit more dangerous in southern Colombia, but it should not be a problem. Avoid Florencia at all costs. My fiance works for a bus company, and this is what she told me. The scenery in Colombia is amazing. Sit back and enjoy the views of the Andes!
