Help! I am currently in Santa Cruz and am on a tight time limit (6 days) before I have to be back in Beunos Aires. I desperately wanted to do a short visit to Uyuni Salt plains, but bus is going to task 30hrs from Santa Cruz to Uyuni leaving me with not enough time to see the Salt plains. I am trying to get a flight, but having no luck in findng out where (if any) an airport near Uyuni is.... any suggestions??
The closest airport is Sucre, La Paz is not a lot further. From both places it´s a far busride to Uyuni, from La Paz pick a bus to Oruro and then get on the train.
The typical salt-lake-trip takes 1 to 4 days, in the one-day trip you only visit the salt-plains, if you do the 4 day alternative you see a lot of geisers, lakes, flamengos, desert and very beautiful scenery. Best to do the 4 day trip.
Remember the area is on 4500 metres of altitude (aprox). So if you come from Santa Cruz beware of altitude sickness. May ruin your trip completely.
Bottom line is.. I wouldn´t do it. In Bolivia you allways have to calculate 1 or 2 days of flexibility in case you end up in a strike, road-block or flat tyre. Change your flight to Buenos Aires or visit the Jesuit Mission villages from Santa CRuz instead.
[ Edit: sorry, no promos in the forum please. ]
thanks Marco - I had pretty much come to the same conclusion from the info I had got here in Santa Cruz... think I´m goign to have to make Uyuni next trip. Will probably head down to BA and spend a few extra days there instead... Thanks again for your advice!
do u know how far it is from uyuni to sucre? more or less? and from sucre to potosi? and potosi to cochabamba? potosi la paz?
map is small but those roads......
hm, ill see it tomorrow, but i heard not to trust the info in the bus terminals, so i hope u can give me a second opinion.
