anyone know how to go about getting a bangladesh visa? I will be in india and nepal before entering and am hoping to go overland to bangladesh.
Also, is it easy to get a flight from bangladesh to bankok (and should i book it from bangladesh or from home?)?
Oh and one more question:
is it true that is impossible(or very difficult) to cross the border overland from bangladesh to myanmar???
okay, let's see :
as far as i know, you'll get a bangladeshi visa in kolkata, i'm also quite sure that you can't cross the border into bangladesh due to the situation in the north-eastern states of india, at least not easily nor legally .
same goes for the crossing into myanmar, but you might want to think about crossing from myanmar into thailand, which is possible. in case you want to fly to BKK, you could check with www.bimanair.com, the bangladeshi airline, for prices. i'd say with an e-ticket shouldn't be to big a difference.
have a nice trip,
Cheers flynn, so does this mean that:
we can get a visa in calcutta but then can only fly from calcutta to bangladesh and then can only fly from bangladesh to burma and can then travel overland to thailand? Is that the only way of doing our route, they must be quite short(and maybe expensive!?) flights?
Do you think flying from calcutta to burma and cutting out bangladesh would be a good idea? we've only got about 4 weeks max to do the trip.
oh yeah, do you know if it is true that we have to spend $300 each in burma even we are only there a few days!?
Thanks alot, any help would be great...starting to get headaches...too much organizing!
...is it true that is impossible(or very difficult) to cross the border overland from bangladesh to myanmar???
I don't believe it is possible to cross any land borders into Myanmar except 1 from Yunnan (China) and one in Northern Thailand (but it's not really a crossing as you must stay within 15 km of the border crossing).
I've never heard of anyone being allowed to cross form bangledesh, I doubt it is possible, if you find out differently, let us know.

It's not possible to cross by land form Myanmarinto Thailand. The flight is $220 (r/t) Bangkok-Yangoon-Bangkok. I believe it's $130 (one-way) Yangoon-Bangkok. Only takes around an hour.
I'm pretty sure it's easy to cross the border from Calcutta into Bangledesh (it's not so far away either). The dangerous restricted parts of NE India are up between Bangledesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, & China (not between Calcutta and Bangledesh).
i had another look for the border crossing myanmar into thailand
Overland border crossings with Thailand
Tachileik in eastern Shan state with Mae Sai in Chiang Rai province of northern Thailand
Myawaddy in Kayin state with Mae Sot in Tak province of Thailand
Kaw Thaung in the southern tip of Thaninthayi division with Rannong of southern Thailand
Overland crossings with Laos, India and Bangladesh are currently only for the local people.
I'm pretty sure it's easy to cross the border from Calcutta into Bangledesh (it's not so far away either).
so you could travel overland to bangladesh, fly to myanmar, check out the situation of entering thailand overland.
can't say anything about bangladesh, but i did like myanmar and four weeks really isn't that long , is it?!?
the compulsory exchange of 300 US$ was scrapped 2003, but you'll still get the best exchange rates for US$ cash .
good luck with the organizing,
Ok so it looks like this overland trip isn't going to work. Our only options seem to fly direct from Calcutta to BK or enter bangladesh overland and then fly from there to BK.
Anyone know a cheap airline to fly from calcutta to BK and how much it will cost? Can we just arrive and book the flights a few days before we leave? this would be handy cause we dont really know when or even from where we will fly from(we could also fly from kathmandu) and would like to play it by ear!
the flight from katmandu to BKK is more expensive than from kolkata.
i booked a druk air (bhutanese airline) flight from CCU to BKK some years back, because it was the cheapest, but i had to wait about a week for a seat.
best airline i ever flew with, spent the week in puri, orissa.
i'm sure it's going to be great ,
spent the week in puri, orissa.
What's the deal with Bhang in Puri? Is it good (or weak)? Is it really easy to buy (in smoke form)?
