Could anyone help me please?
Im Wondering how far the Grand Canyon is from Las Vegas?
Im thinking of hiring a car so how long would it take roughly & what are the roads like - are they easy to follow?
Also, whereabouts is the Hoover dam?
Can I possibly do the full trip in a day.
Las Vegas - Grand Canyon - lunch - Hoover Dam - lunch - Las Vegas
Any help is much appreciated
sorry - i forgot to ask
whats the approx cost of a full tank of petrol in the USA
I'm guessing from memory that the Grand Canyon is probably around 4-5 hours from Vegas. Hoover Dam is less than 2 hours. I would suggest 2 days/1 night (at the Grand Canyon), you can visit Hoover Dam on the way back.
If you only have 1 day available, you can take a small plane flying over the grand canyon (book from vegas)(1/2 day), and then do Hoover Dam the other 1/2 day.
Petrol is a little more expensive in the West (and California) than in the East. It's $2.35/Gallon here in PA. Maybe its $2.50/Gollan in Nevada. So a 12 gallon tank (small car) might cost $30 to fill.
Not a bad trip at all. I just did that on my way from Virginia to California. I had some friends to stay with in Las Vegas and stopped at the Grand Canyon the same day. Got there early in the morning and then headed out to Vegas later that night. The Hoover Dam is only about an hour from the southern edge of Vegas. But where you are going at the Grand Canyon is the question? I was at the south rim and it took over 5 hours to get to the Hoover Dam. Maybe only 4 but still pretty long. You can probably make the west rim in about 2.5 to 3 hours from Vegas. Didn't get to see that view but I know that the south rim was AWESOME. If you have the chance you gotta go. It was pretty amazing for me to see the Grand Canyon during the day and then Vegas at night in the same day! I truly wish that I could have spent more time but I was moving and had my car towing behind a moving truck. You could do it in a day but if you can give it a chance. There is a lot of camping inside the park so go rugged. Shoot, sleep in the car if you have to.
Just Do It!
There is no "west rim" to the Grand Canyon--and thus, no road that goes there.
Like Iron Chef said, it's about 5 hours to the south rim. It's probably about 7 hours form Las Vegas to the north rim. For me, the "Sun Room" at the lodge on the north rim is the best view of the canyon--and it's not too difficult (if you have one more day) to go see the southern edge of Lake Powell(or Bryce Canyon),continuing on from the north rim, before returning to Las Vegas.
In either case, book a room ahead of time--these areas are desolate and there's not that many places to stay.
