Hello again, we have rented a car for our stay in Ireland 2nd week of Aug, we fly into Shannon airport and need to get to Sligo Town. What is the most scienic route and how long does it take? Hows anyone ever driven this route??/ Thanks so much. Kay Capps
The most direct and least scenic route to Galway from Shannon will take about 3-4 hours driving in the car. Taking the scenic route is much longer as you will be taking coast roads but ultimately worth it!!!
Best route to take is this:
From Shannon you should head for west clare. To do this follow the signs for Ennis. From Ennis you should head for Lahinch or Doolin. It will take you about an hour's driving to reach the coast, then you can take the coast road taking in the Cliffs of Moher, the little villages of Doolin and Ballyvaughan and see the Burren. Its a very unique landscape, and even though some of the driving is along winding, narrow roads, I would totally recommend it.
From Ballyvaughan, you will want to head to Kinvarra. This will bring you back onto the main Limerick to Galway rd. Its about a half hr's drive to Galway from here.
YOu'll probably want a rest at this point, so it might be a good idea to stop off in Galway for an hour or so. Driving into the city can be confusing because there are a lot of roundabouts. Once you reach Galway city centre, there is a one-way traffic system in place, but there are plenty of multi-story car-parks where you can stikc the car for a couple of hrs. Galway is a great town and you will enjoy spending a bit of time here and getting something to eat.
From Galway you should follow the signs for Sligo out of the city. YOu should head towards the town of Cong in Co. Mayo. This will take you through some of COnnemara, which is another very beautiful part of the country. Cong itself it quite nice...there are some nice tea rooms there and a very nice old monastic site. Also, you should drive in around the grounds of Kylemore Abbey just for a peek!
Head towards Westport. Westport is a busy little town, often traffic congestion, so you might lose a few mins stuck in traffic here.....follow the signs for Castlebar.
After this Sligo will be clearly signposted all the way.
This is a lot of driving in one day, so it depends on how much you are up for it! If you arent rushing to get to Sligo, I'd really recommend overnighting along the way, in Connemara, for example. I think you'd really enjoy it.
ANyway, there is route planner on www.aaireland.ie which will give you very specific directions on just where to go.
Enter your route Shannon to Galway via Doolin
Galway to Sligo via Connemara and you can print off the info.
Hope that helps!
