A girlfriend and I are planning to travel to the Greek Islands (Cyclades) from August 8 - 17. We don't have anything planned, the only thing we know so far is we want to go to Santorini for a few days.
We have asked numerous people if we should be booking our ferry trips and accommodations. Everyone says NO way you'll be disappointed because the ferries times are unreliable and there's always some place to stay (if you're not too picky).
Is this good advice? Should we book our ferries and accommodation because we are travelling in the peak of high season?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated...neither of us have been to the Greek Islands before.
Just turn up and go with the flow. There seriously is enough accomodation around and loads of people waiting at ferry ports to entice you to their places. My boyfriend and I took a tent with us and usually ended up at nice campsites. The one time we didn't have accomodation was after getting off a ferry at 3am in the morning, so all the backpackers that were on the same ferry headed down to the beach and we had a party there instead before just sleeping in sleeping bags on the beach. Great fun!
Definitely don't book ferries, but maybe give yourself a spare day to get back to Athens just in case the ferry you were planning on getting decides not to run/is full/leaves riduculously late.
The Cyclades are gonna be seriously hot in August!
Thanks for the advise. We won't book ferries for sure.
Good point about planning to head back to Athens early, it would really suck to get stuck on an island and miss our plane.
If you have any advise on which islands to hit that would be great.
