Hi, I am thinking of backpacking with a friend through Vietnam next year. Could anyone tell me what would be the best time to look at going and we are looking at going for about a month. Would this be enough time? Last question promise ;) Whats the best area - North or the South.

Thanks,

Vietnam is easy to travel the length of. Start in Saigon, have a few days there, couple of days in the Mekong Delta, then bus up the country stopping at Mui Ne, Nha Trang, Hoi An, Hue and then Hanoi. From Hanoi you can easily get to Sapa and Halong Bay. May to September is the rainy season. A month is fine to do the above.

The only thing I would add to daveh's post is to hit Dalat on your trip north. I really enjoyed getting out of the heat of HCMC and into the cool mountains. There are many waterfalls nearby and the Cat Tien Nat'l Park as well. Worth a few days on your trip north. I would travel in the Nov. to March time period, if possible. More tourists but better weather. Good luck with your trip.

If you go in Summmer better to get to the south cause the beach is so clear and clean, if you like adventure discover the north such as Sapa, Cao Bang, Bac Ha, Mai chau etc, one month is enough, the best time to get is in February because it is Vietnamese Traditional New Year, all the nation full of flower, flag, slogan it is an experience if you join in a Vietnamese family for Tet
