Travelers today rely more on the internet than personal recommendations to gather travel information, according to a poll of 18,000 online consumers in 18 countries, eMarketer reports http://http://www.mediabuyerplanner.com/2005/07/11/in_travel_search_surpasses/index.php(via MediaBuyerPlanner).

The poll, conducted by market research company GMI, found that people aren't just searching; they're booking, as well. Britons, Australians and Americans are among the world's most satisfied online travelers. Japanese and Polish consumers are the least. One in five Russians, the most skeptical group, say online travel services are not worth it.

An age differentiation appears to be coming out of the numbers. Among Brits, for instance, 60 percent of those under 30 favored online travel booking, while their over-30 compatriots favored the internet only 37 percent of the time.

The size of sample may affect the results as well. 18,000 from 18 countries that would be 1,000 per country. I am personally biased towards nowadays statistics as most of them were carried out in a hurry and the reliability wont be widely acceptable. (But who aford to get a bigger sample then??? Imagine 1,000 people out of 25,500,000 people in my country...the accuracy?)

Similarly, a recent survey showed that Swiss is the happiest people in this world while Japanese is the 2nd!

I think usually it's a combination of sources we try to gather info about our destinations: friends, guide books, newspaper/magazine articles, websites, discussion forums etc

internet offers are cheaper and easier to search than travel agents or ailines itself - so I am supriced that younger (more computer literate) use this option

How about personal recommendations on travel websites? Like the forums or travel help features here on TP? Which way does that count in the poll...

For each and everyone here we would most likely take the personal advices from our hands-on travellers. And since our personal recommendations we are writing it online, that counts in the poll as relying more in the internet than the word of mouth.. hehehe.. cheers!

Yeah I came across with that one too. And I am actually surprised that in a Copenhagen news, dated March 3, 2005, Danes are now the happiest people in the world. Achieving the happiness score of 8.0, Denmark already passed Switzerland in terms of how satisfied they were with their present life. Previously, they ranked second only to Switzerland..

Maybe we can have some survey here in TP..
