I know a few - women - (something about that word...) who have cut their hair really short and it looks great. Just do it.

Lots of interesting replies to that, thanks. Might keep it in the back of my mind anyway. I certainly won't be doing it before leaving home, as my poor mother would probably go into an early grave if I turned up at her door as a Sinead O'Connor look-alike.

I like the idea of the braids Tallbird....

Last night I bought three different types of intensive conditioning treatments, a moisturising shampoo and some serum. I'll hang on to the locks for the time being....

Don't do it!!!! Girls with long hair are scrummy!

Why not go halfway and get it cut shoulder length?

Cut, Ev, cut!

Keep in mind, Ev...

The more hair care products you put on your hair, the more damage that will occur. Even the products that are meant to strengthen and repair are chemical-based. The more you mix products, the more they can interact, stripping the proteins and causing additional dryness/breakage.

I found that going back to a very basic shampoo was less damaging. I also use a dilute vinegar rinse to remove the "sludge" from conditioners. It leaves your hair shiny and smooth - without smelling like a salad.

Here are some more natural things you can do to help your hair (scroll down):
Hair Care

Also, have your ends trimmed back to the healthiest length - that may be a few inches, but it will help. The longer the hair, the more pulling that is required to brush/comb it. Do not go for the cheapest brushes and combs. They are not manufactured well so they have nicks, etc. along the bristles/teeth. That will cause damage too, snagging and tearing the hair shafts. It's hard to "repair" hair that is constantly being asssaulted by a badly made brush.

I've 'shaved' my head a few times (couple of mm's), but also had it pretty long. I love the low maintenance that short hair brings with it, especially when travelling or when it's warm.

Having said that, it's always a bit of a risk. It takes some getting used to and it doesn't look good on everyone (myself included which is why I go for slightly longer usually).... Personally I think women with shaved heads can look amazing, but I'd prefer it if my wife doesn't do it

I would definitely do it if I were you!!! I've had short hair the last 7 years and I love it. People (guys) always tell me that girls with short hair look cooler, smarter, and more good-looking... But maybe those who doesn't say anything are of a different opinion...

Sinnead O'Connor, Wynona Ryder, Demi More, Faye Wong (used to), Laurence Fishburne in 'The Matrix'... Just don't know why, I like females with short hairs...clean and sexy.
