Check out Tranz Scenic New Zealand Railways. The 'Overlander' looks like a great way to get to Wellington from Auckland. Has anyone here ever bought the 'Scenic Rail Pass'? The $499/monthly might be worth it if you want to see at least most of the North Island. Anyone here ever 'railed' across New Zealand?

Your right Evan, the rail is a good way to go.. the Tranz Scenic is the most popular one & the scenery is stunning through here. I have driven all of these routes though & its all good

The rail is interesting, (I love rail travel - more laid back, you can walk around, and you always meet interesting people) but doesn't have very good reach, and only one train a day Auckland-Wellington in each direction! So better to do specific voyages - wouldn't bother with the pass. Good value is the backpacker rates if you can get them, especially if the train has a 'viewing lounge' area - just leave your older style seat and hang out in the lounge.
