I am going to Spain soon and I want to draw out my Euros from ATM machines that have the Maestro logo instead of taking cash or travellers cheques. I'm young and a first time traveller so I know nothing about this at the moment, is there a procedure to change the money to Euros in your bank account before you leave your country or do you simply take your card and draw out money and the ATM machine autimatically adds on the conversion fee?

You can just take the money out and when you get your printed receipt the balance will be in euros. Check with your bank at home to make sure your card will work over there because I know of people who have had problems. Also, check with your bank at home to see if you can use any other banks atm's over there without incurring a fee everytime because these fees can add up (I know I can use certain atm's around the world for free)... if you cant just withdraw larger amounts of money as this will minimise the fees...

My card has a Maestro logo on it which is an international symbol, all I have to do is find an ATM that caters for every bank and has a maestro logo on it..then just spend away right?

Hello 'Jimmy Neutron' !?

Yes, your card with the maestro symbol should work beautifully in Spain. Spend away!

In theory it should work but I would advise you to check with your bank before you go anyway.. my sister and here friends where in spain last month working on that assumption and ended up not being able to use their cards... I personally have never had that probolem though

I have a maestro card and have been using it in Italy and France. I have been taking out money at ATMs and have had no trouble. All ATMs have taken my card...

Hello Sui.. Just for the hell of it you should make sure you can withdraw from the account your money is in (Checking or Savings).
I don't know what your situation is but my money is in my savings account and in most countries you will have the option to withdraw from one or the other but I was in Ireland recently and when using an ATM machine you are not able to withdraw from a savings account, only checking !!!!
I was in deep #@&%, I managed to get some money put in my checking and all was well.
I should have done my homework first, a lesson was learned.
Cheers, ED-

just on a side note if the bank machine has the symbol for 'cirrus' it will also accept international cards ie Maestro

My advice is still to check your possibilities and fees at your bank. Because when I used my Maestro abroad I had no problems with receipt of money but then I paid attention to that enormous fees...
