Has anyone ever been to Hamilton Island in Whitsunday?

WHat is it like, and is it the tropical paradise they make it out to be. If not where is the best place in Whitsunday.

Please help I am an uniformed American trying to plan a sick Australian trip.

If Cairns is better please let me know

all the whitsunday islands are generally fairly expensive and exclusive- not very good if you're on a tight budget.

airlie beach is the main mainland place opposite the islands and some people tend to stay there and just make day trips out to the islands. it used to be that you could have use of all the facilities of the resorts on the day trips and the people that payed hundreds of dollars a night to stay there would get quite annoyed!! not sure if this is still the case.

i haven't actually been to the whitsunday area but i've been to cairns and i loved that!!

hope that helps,

from Airlie Beach you can easily do a sailing trip to the Whitsundays, including a stop at Hamilton Island (soliqa is right we could use the facilties of the resort). It is a Tropical Paradise, but staying at the resort definitely wasn't included in my backpacker's budget. The sailing was brilliant though, we were a group of 12 travellers and cruised around for 2 nights and 3 days. Also have never done better snorkeling in my life !

My recommendation: Don't go on the "Pride Of Airlie"

Am planning on going to the Whitsunday Islands as well. But realized that the resorts there are so pricey. Wanted to know if anyone knew how much a day trip to one of the islands say DayDream Island would be??

South Molle Island has budget lodge accommodation. You can easily get there from Airlie Beach. A 3-day 2-night trip is your best sailing option. And there are many choices. A trip costs around around $399 all-inclusive. Some recommended boats are Southern Cross, Siska, Ragamuffin, Anaconda, and you can do a combined sailing / overnight island trip to Long Island's barefoot lodge quite cheaply. On a boat previously mentioned in the cruisewhitsundays advert posted........

Hamilton Island has 3-star lodges. It's a nice Island, but one of the more commercial (high rise accommodation) islands. You'll get a good deal there. Make sure though it includes transfers from the mainland.
