I was wondering if there any black folks travelling through Asia. Have you ever came across black person travelling in those areas?.. I am a brother and have travelled through all Europe, North America and few countries in middle east. I want to go to Asia but am worried a bit because you don’t see alotta brothers wanting to backpack through Asia. I want to find out why?.. I came across few AfricanAmericans and Black British in Sweden, Norway, Holland and in the Middle East but never heard a brother travelling through Asia. I know that there brothers doing so but have ever came across one in Asia?

Hi Homer,

I don't think your skin colour would make that much of a difference if you're travelling through asia. With China specifically, you'll find yourself faced with people who stare every turn you take. Chinese people will stare at anyone who looks foreign and non-chinese, some may come up to you to try to practice their english, but beyond that very little happens. The country has opened up so much in the last couple of decades and with all the western culture flooding into the country (not to mention tourists) a black person will not be that much of an oddity. All you need to do is smile and get used to the staring! =)

Hope this helped

Hi Ann, many thanks for replying.. skin color is actually not that important to me - I would have travelled to Asia anyways..
I got used to people who stare me and perhaps try to touch and talk to me to see if Im are really like them. I was in a small town at the border between Russia and Norway in 2003 and boy did I attract some folks or what!! I love talking to people no matter what colour, religion and sexual oriantation as long as they are not aggressive towards me,.. and I believe Asian folks are openminded and educated.
anyway thanks Ann.

hi homer,

i met quite a few black guys all over asia, but i don't think any of them would have called himself a brother, or herself a sister for that matter !

a brother through asia - i guess maybe me!
started in singapore, its a very rare thing dude. i counted about 10 that i saw in 5 countries, certain places have more like KL and bangkok other than that a few and far between.
you'd definitely get stared at alot they semmed to be fascinated by my fu6ked up afro. the colour of your skin does matter out here but not in the same way its weird, basically they'll be curious and interested, but havent had any negative sh!t thrown my way.

found out in one hotel that they wouldnt let africans stay cos of some kind of past problems. the colour of your skin doesnt really matter in the whole scheme of things its more your attitude. some places you'd blend in others you wouldnt. gotta say thou there needs to be more black peeps travelling out here.

oh and another thing which they do a lot - if they're staring, i kinda wave at them and the wave and smile back. travelled to singapore, borneo, malaysia, brunei, indonesia, thailand and now in laos...

its all good, happy dayz
the journey continues...
