Everyone's always talking about what to pack when you go travelling. However, we all end up taking far too much stuff so what about suggestions for what NOT to take...

To start things off...

Too many clothes - instead take things that are easy to wash and quick drying (plus in places like SE Asia laundries are so cheap and quick anyway). Also you can always buy things as you go.

Don't take a large backpack - you'll only fill it with stuff you don't really need.

Don't take valuables that you don't absolutely need - the less things you have to worry about the more you'll be able to relax and enjoy the experience. Do you really really need your £1,000 laptop?

lugged my skateboard all around the world with me and only skated about ten times intotal and only in oz and new zealand. it was a bit cumbersome in the cook islands, not too mention useless!

agree about the backpack... get the smallest one you possibly can. same with daypack really. you definitely aquire a hell of a lot of stuff when you travel.

im leaving for se asia on sunday! yay!

As great as lying in my hammock is, I wouldn't take it with me again. Just too heavy and taking up to much space in the backpack.

looks like I'm not going anywhere, not even cornwall since my bloody mate decided he only wants to go if three more people comeand he went and invited someone I can NOT spend a week in a tent with!

ANYWAY!!...Good for you Joey you'll have a wicked time mate!

ummm....I wouldn't pack my snorkel again, its way easier to hire than carry...and you never use it as often as you think,

Depends on where you're going really. Don't bring a swimsuit to Greenland for example. Or a snowboard to Costa Rica. ;)

Snorkel, flippers, tube... Crazy me! Each time I'm thinking about not to take it with me. But when I arrive to the place - oh what's that in my backpack?

books. and i don't mean one or two, i mean more than five. being the heavy reader i am, and also quite the pack rat, this turned out to be a burden as i couldn't bear to part with any of the books i read. a few options if you want to bring reading material for travel days:

1) Throw away books you've finished to keep the weight off.
2) Find LIGHTER ways to entertain yourself... a deck of cards, word search books, etc.

oh the back pain was terrible. :(

You could always read the book, then mail it back home to a family member or friend so it would be there upon your return. Actually that works for just about anything...if you find yourself buying to much on the trip...mail it home. :)
