Well, Mikey B already stole the thunder in the Photography forum somewhat, but there is more to add
The new, much improved photography system was uploaded today! Thanks specifically to Sander for a lot of blood, sweat and tears helping set up a brilliant new system that will allow us all to start using tags as a new way of categorising photos. Those who have used sites such as Flickr, Technorati or del.icio.us will be familiar with the concept. Basically you just add keywords to describe your photos. A great option is to tag photos as the city they were taken in, which will immediately provide a new range of city galleries. I've gone through all my photos to get the ball rolling, but of course these things only work well if LOTS of people start tagging away. The relationships between tags are calculated daily and highly related tags are interlinked. You will also be able to follow the most active tags on the main photography page. In fact, that page has received a bit of a revamp as well, now opting for a somewhat more elegant way of displaying the country galleries as well. Use the 'me' tag to denote that picture as a profile picture (not implemented yet, but it will be soon).
But there's more. As promised, we have included generous new upload limits. We have opted for a monthly upload limit rather than a total space limit as it was previously. For new members, this will mean they can upload 10MB a month (or 120MB a year). For Full Members, it's 20MB a month. Respected Members are allowed 30MB and Gurus 40MB a month. You may be wondering how on earth you're going to fill up that space. Well, it is now also possible to upload files up to 10MB in size, so in fact you could blow your limit with one photo! In fact, there are far less limits than before. If your photo is larger than 400px in size, we'll take care of that and resize it on our server for you. For the users who occassionally have a 2/3MB file to upload straight off their camera this will be very good news. Of course, we don't display the 3MB file, we resize and compress it all automatically so that it is at a reasonable download size for visitors.
And that leads me to my next point.. the new sizes.. two new photo sizes have been introduced, a miniature square thumbnail (which you may start to see show up in various areas) and a large version (up to 800px wide) for those who want to see the details.
We are using a new photo compression plugin to handle the resizing. I think you'll notice the drastically improved image quality. All currently uploaded photos have been recompressed using this new plugin.
There are some major new changes to the photo galleries as well. You will see a different layout allowing viewing in XS, S or M sizes. Or you can click the 'show as stream' link for each gallery to show the photos one at a time. There you will be able to view the photos at the L size as well.
Finally, there is an option when uploading to tick whether the file is intended for the photo gallery or not. This is specifically intended for those users who might want to upload a photo and only use it in their blog. For instance, as part of a custom blog design (see my blog ) or perhaps just a photo that they want to discuss in their blog but don't want to have shown in their gallery.
Well, on that note, I hope you all enjoy the new functionality and as always please let me know of any bugs, feedback and so on ...
[ Edit: got my facts wrong.. woops.. ]
