Hi Guys,
This site is a great idea, I feel as if there are so many questions I need answered & had no idea who to ask, so im hoping you can help!!

I am planning my 1st round the world trip, not visiting that many countries but we are circling the globe! All of our flights are booked but its just what do we do when we get there now! Our route is.. UK > Thailand (2 Weeks) > Australia (6 Months) > USA (1 ½ Months) > UK

In the US we are flying into LA & travelling around for about 4 – 5 Weeks & then onto New York staying aprox 7 Days. We arrive in LA at the very beginning in July next year & leave New york mid August. Looking at past posts a lot of people seem to recommend San Diego, so I have added this in?

So I am thinking our route in the US would be something like this….

LA (staying here about 2weeks, visiting various places, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, The OC) > San Diego > Las Vegas > Grand Canyon > San Francisco > LA > New York

Our time will be mostly spent Partying, Shopping, Sightseeing & lazing on the beach!

My questions are...

Is this a good route? Should we add anything else in or take anything out?
How long do you think it would take to travel to each of these places, I am thinking of going by Greyhound bus?
Is 5 weeks enough time to visit all of these places?!

Thanks in advance for your help, please just answer what you can.

Thanks!
Jade

We made a similar trip in 1998. The best way is to here a rental car in the UK in advance . It's much cheaper. Our itinerary was as follows:
- L.A.
- San Diego 2 days take the trolley.
- Phoenix (Scottsdale)
-Flagstaff(visit Sedona on your way)
-Grand Canyon 2 days
-Monument valley
-Lake Powell 2 days
-Bryce canyon
-Zion national park
-Las Vegas
-Stove pipe wells (death valley)
-Mammoth lakes
-Yosemite national park 2 days
-San Francisco 3 days
-Monterrey( Carmel)
-Santa Barbara 2 days
-Santa Monica
-La

My suggestion would be if you can take more days in the National parks you wont regret it. They are marvellous.Always willing to give more info if required. Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for your reply! Looks like you managed to fit alot in while you were there! How long did the whole trip take you? Did you just pass through those that you havent said days for?

I did look into hiring a car as I would much prefer the freedom of driving than getting the bus, but our problem is that I am 21 & my friend is 23, so we just miss the age limit! Unless you are over 24 you have to pay a daily charge, which after working it out altogether costs quite alot, especially as there are only two of us & we are going to be on a budget. If you can recommend any cheap companies though that would be great!

Thanks again
Jade

So my question is this. Why are you only staying in the Southwestern United States? There's a Northwest TOO you know. :( And it's absolutely beautiful here. I like your itinerary, but my recommendation is you come up through Oregon and Washington too before heading to New York.

Hey there,

Well good question! :) To be honest I dont really know much about the US all we see over here on TV is all about LA, Vegas & NY! I know how sad are we! :(
When we 1st started planning our trip we were only supposed to be staying 2weeks! We were flying into LA & then flying to NY & then home, but then we realised how close Vegas & San Francisco were to LA & all those other places in between so we decided to extend it. We didnt even look at the Northwest as we cant even afford what we are doing now so didnt want it to get too out of control!!
I still do plan on coming back to travel the country properly for about a year or so & I will definitely be visiting the Northwest then! Hopefully we will get time & have enough cash left on this trip & we will drop in for a few days...

Thanks
Jade

I'm glad to hear that! The Northwest, while not given a whole lot of attention, is so beautiful. Especially Washington. I hope you do manage to make it here sometime! Meanwhile have fun on your travels!
