I really don't know why everyone is getting so offended by this thread. I'm Australian and I tend to agree with moscowmetr that we are loud and drunk, but I know myself that I have many many positive attributes and seriously I am not going to get offended if someone writes a little paragraph in this forum. I don't think I would even get offended if someone said it to my face.

I only agree agree on one of the generalisations that moscowmetr brought up. I actually don't find the Germans to be uptight - I have my own opinion, as each and every single other person reading this thread. And I know that so many people will disagree with what I am writing here. All I'm really trying to say - while moscowmetr's tread isn't all that positive - it is only his opinion and there are so many more out there - and really the only opinion that matters is yours or the opinion of the people you love.

I agree with Breevic, I don't really see moscowmetr calling down anyones posts or opinions. True he has generalised, but truth be told we ALL do it in some form or another.

I don't agree with his opinion, all of the Germans I have travelled with have been great. The aussies were certainly there for the party but they were good people. As for the Spanish and United Statesians... as a wise man once said.. "no comment" haha!

True, generalisations are a horrible thing, I challange all of you to walk down the street and not generalise people. "oh! look what they are wearing!... Look! that bum! What a lazy useless person.." and so on.

All I am saying is don't call down someones generalisations when you probably do it too.

Yeah, you know I got a little burned up about this yesterday because it's a really frustrating part about being an American traveller these days (even without anybody commenting on why). Having a laugh over a stereotype with friends I don't think does any harm. Afterall, stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. But to call out a number of stereotypes in an international forum borders on (no, it is) being offensive. Honestly, I just think the whole thing could have been phrased better. But you're right, I've found that the best way to get past any of this mess while travelling is to just have a good sense of humour about yourself and where you come from. So for now I'm off to fire my gun, eat at McDonald's and to speak in a loud rude voice (hopefully not all at once!)

I think this is a great topic. I live in a toursit town in Australia and we have our own perseptions of the different nationalities that come through. And because we are about to go backpacking ourselves - we were wondering how Aussies are perceived in general.

And Breevic, to hammer my point home, I too live in a resort town. This past winter an Aussie and a Kiwi robbed a bank in my hometown, and let's just say they didn't do a very good job of it. You may have read about them in the Aussie press being referred to as "Dumb and Dumber". But I still think fondly of you all as fun, loud drinkers! Perhaps not the best traits for a bank robbers, however.

Don't forget to spend plenty of time on the couch in front of the TV!;)

Actually, if you look at the last 10 of his recent posts...he has been out right rude. He told a guru "he has to many posts, get a life" IF I thought it was just someone wanting an honest discussion, I would have easily breezed past it, but he seems to like to stir the pot, and he really hasn't had one positive and/or kind thing to say.

I have no problem with anyone voiceing their opinion, but broad generalizations only tend to inflame...and as has been said...this IS an international site...to what end would one want to lump an entire population into one sentence??

As my Grandma said....Do onto others............

ok, i have to admit, I was the 'friend' MoscowMeter had spoken too about backpacking annoyances that sparked this debate. First of all:

I am American. And i laugh when he bashes americans. I even encourage him.

I dont live in America anymore, left shortly before GW was relecetd and decided it was not the culture for me. So i tend to agree on his and MANY other generalaizations about Americans.

So i feel i can laugh when anyone makes fun of us cause we ARE a ridiculous culture to elect such leaders, and WE DO eat McDonalds all the time, watch TV, Buy SUVs and just plain - not so smart!

but ive met some great USAians abroad that i still talk to...it seems that the best of us leave the US to see what other countries are like, rather than watch them on CNN.

as far as the other cultures...come on - ive traveled for 10 years around Euro land - You AUSSIES, you know u drink alot! The spaniards do FEEL the PASSION, and my own gripe - ITALIANS are as Loud as Americans :)

and moscowmeter - he DOES stink like Maple syrup and talks about Hockey WAY too much!

so lets all admit we generlaize - it saves alot of time in who we wish to talk to.

Almost half the populations of the US did NOT vote for Baby Bush in the last election. I do NOT eat at McDonalds, I loath tv (well...except for Gil ;) ) I do NOT own a car.....I can dish it out, and take it just as well...care to have a beer at the local bar? and we can joke until dawn....but I still think the place and the way it was put, was inappropriate.
