Hi
I am travelling with two other girls to the tioman islands in about a weeks time-it is the last 10 days of our trip around asia and we would llike to have a pretty chilled out tan-topping up, snorkelling & scuba-ing time? Does anyone have any suggestions. Ideally we wuold llke it to be like long beach on Perhenthian Kecil or Thong Nai Pan Noi on Koh Phan ngan NOT Chewang in Kog Samui.......Also should we travel aroung the island or stick to one place...
thanks for your help

Well, Tioman is a beautiful place to see, but certainly not as much beautiful as Perentian. Sightseeing is very limited : the trek in the jungle to Juara beach is nice (2-3 hours, sometime steep, but there is a small cafe in the middle), as well as the trek to the west of the island.

If you want to sunbath, BE AWARE of the sand flies : you won't see them, you won't feel them, but after two-three days, you'll look like you've been bitten by dozens of mosquitoes .. (and scratching as well).

If you enjoy a glass of wine or a beer, forget it : sale of alcohol is forbidden. The only way to get some is by having diner in the big five-stars resort (which can be quite far, depending where you stay).

Good snorkelling, though, and wonderful water !

If you look after an alternative, why not try Redang Island ?

Enjoy your trip !

Hmm, you must have been on a different island. Tioman is a duty free island and you can buy alcohol at almost any store on the island for ridiculously cheap prices! In fact, I dare say it is one of the main sources of income for the island.

The 'western class' (not 5 stars, more like 3/4 stars) resort on the island, is called Berjaya Tioman.

Well, I have no idea how the island compares to Perhentian, but I quite liked Tioman. We stayed at Berjaya, but there also seemed to be some nice places in Salang (?), which we visited on a snorkelling day trip. If I were to return I think I'd actually prefer to stay there instead. There seemed to be some ok places there.

I have a blog entry on our Tioman trip if you're interested.. see here

It's not exactly prohibited. Many of the beach stall operators are Muslims, and by religion they are not allowed to consume or even sell it. That's why you couldn't get wine or beer easily at the beach.
