i have to disagree with travelers cheques, i have been in places where there is NO bank, hotel or Visa/Mastercard accepted and no ATM. and it was in Scotland on Skye. the only form of currency i had on me was Travellers cheques. I dont advize leavin too much cash on you as theft, all though rare - has happened too me... in Western Europe! and you really dont wanna have to travel on credit anyway and pay for it for years later.....
Agree with GeoffG,
My Bank of Montreal card worked everywhere too, but it did get jammed in the bank machine at the Train station in Torun Poland, I missed the train outta there on my way back to Germany so had no more money as I planned to take out Euro once in Berlin. Had to take out more cash to get a new ticket when it happened. The bank there was reminiscent of what I would suppose to be Socialist bureaucracy, OMG I stood in hours of several different types of lines until I could arrange someone to figure out where to pick up my card up days later. I had no money for days, and was bailed out by a girl I met who felt sorry for me and took care of me till I got my card back. I love Poles, sweetest thing.
Coles Notes: stash some cash and Polish banks are still not so much customer oriented...a US fiddy does wonders and is easily concealed and a HUGE saviour in dire straits.
I travelled the world for nine months with partner and two kids and didn't take travellers cheques at all. Common sense says make sure you have enough cash if you go out of range of a cash machine.
DO NOT use RBS Advanta!!! They decided to send me a new credit card (to my home address in England whilst I was in Australia) even though my current one hadn't expired. And did they wait for me to activate my new card when I got back? Nope, they cancelled the current one automatically, so it was useless while I was sat on the other side of the planet. Gits!
Good job I'd taken 3 others!
woah whats with the personal atacks on me and my travelers checks - I have travelled for 9 years extensivley and still rely on them.
Common sense is not to carry loads of cash! I was bloody robbed in Ireland!
I have been reading the posts and i think we have a problem if this guy is coming from Australia. I am here now and i went to the atm and they only have four numbered pin codes here. I use six in Australia. Also you know how we have a name for a pin code. Mine is teneal and i dont know the number and they only have numbers to press here. So maybe this will help him and if you could tell me what teneal is in numbers i would be very pleased, becuase now i am stuck with no money.
