Hi, I am new to all this hiking and backpacking stuff and only decided to start because my doctor told me to but despite endless internet searches and various trips to camping and hiking shops i still don't know, what sort of stuff do i need to carry in my backpack? so far i've been told to take:

Matches
Candles
Energy foods (Kendal mint cake etc...)
Tent (obvious)
Maps
Torch
Water

and clothes... anything else i should stick in?

P.S.I am only thinking of going camping and hiking in the peak district so far, not the middle of the antarctic

Zip-lock plastic bags of assorted sizes. Great for keeping your matches, maps, etc. dry. And, you can store the smaller bags in the bigger ones.

First-aid kit! (I know this from experience :( )

Rope. Its very useful, for anything from trying a backpack strap back together if it breaks to a clothesline.

toothbrush
camera
towel (small)
rainclothes
portable kitchen
warm hat and gloves
soap
spices (cooking without them is boring, bring at least salt and pepper)
plastic bags

toiletries

Toilet paper
Bug repellant
Sunscreen
Really good walking shoes/boots (already well worn in)
Biodegradable soap/shampoo
Firewood (if your campsite requires you to bring your own)
Sleeping Bag

Hmm... I'll let you know if I think of anything else...
