I am going to South Africa in December. We were planning on going to Durban before we do the garden route, but Im starting to hear horror stories about how the place is very dangerous Do you think its best to miss it out?

I had absolutely no incidents there whatsoever. You have to be careful but it is the same anywhere really. Dont worry too much and enjoy yourself! Johannesburg is much more dangerous but even there I didnt feel particularly unsafe...

Hi happy1

I am a South African and to say the truth, talk is cheap.

People always make it out to be worse than it really is...
If you plan on goin to Durban avoid the city centre at night, as
it can get rough. But if you take the usual safety precautions
you'll be fine. Stop worrying about what you've heard and go have yourself a good time...
If you want some good beaches avoid Durban city beaches (overcrowded) and go further south to Shellybeach, Uvongo or Amanzimtoti. North of Durban you have Umhlanga and Balito, 2 of my favourites! If you are driving there are some good stalls along the road selling excellent african crafts and stunning wooden ornaments.

Happy travelling!
Trav

I have been living in Durban for 25 years now, and nothing to worry about. I would not be living here if the crime was too bad!
