I am going to the states in may 06 and wont be booking anywhere to stay just turn up and hope to get a room somewhere if not i guess i buy a tent and sleep wherever. any advice would be great i am going via train and bus so does anyone know what these are like, 1st time traveller and not sure what to expect
I've only had experience with hostels in California, and all have been good experiences. I've stayed in about 5 different hostels and only made reservations for one but I had no problem just showing up and getting a bed (I stayed during the summer, which is usually the busy season). There are some hostels which cater only to international travelers, and I've heard that they're really helpful if you're not from the states, so you might want to look into that. Unless you're close to a national park where there is camping permitted, I don't know about the tent idea, some cops can be really touchy about 'loitering' and might fine you. Trains and buses are fine forms of transportation, just remember that most places in America are lacking in the public transportation department. If you're taking Greyhound, some of the stations are a bit dodgy, but the buses for the most part are clean. Trains can be really expensive, depending on where you want to go it might actually be cheaper to fly. Hope I've helped a little.
not sure much about hostels as there arent nearly as many as in europe.
But be careful about sleeping anywhere in ur tent as again America is not as open as Europe is about where u can camp. Many places are private or require a permit.
Thanks for the info its been very useful and now starting to get somewhere i think.
i didnt mean put up a tent anywhere i meant just go to a camping park or something if theres one nearby if not then i guess thats up to me to get some zzz's.
Where about in the States are you going to?
