Hello everybody.

My wife and I have been living and working in the diving and tourism industry on Phuket Island for nine years now. We are very active with the "Lonely Planet" and "Tripadviser" forums and we have just had "Travellerspoint" recommended to us that we can continue with offering recommendations and advice for your upcomming Phuket advance travel plans. On the other forums we are known by the name "PhuketRichard" but there's not enough space for the name here.

Feel free to write if you would like some more info about Phuket in general and make sure to include your travel dates as a lot of the info is seasonal.

Regards From Phuket

Richard & Megumi

Hi Zachary

Most people do not realize that Phuket is such a big Island ( 549 square kilometers) slightly smaller then Singapore. I have been traveling to Thailand since 1970 and fell in love with the country in my younger days. The Thai people, wonderfull food, great prices and of course the stunning scenery.

After a 10 year stop working in the Carribean Islands my wife and I visited a friend who lived in Phuket for some diving on our way back to Japan from Fiji. Within a week we both had jobs and other then returning to Japan to pack up our possetions we have fallen in love with Phuket and decided to stay and retier here.

Many seem to associate only Patong with Phuket and it seems to be the primary destination for most first time visitors who want to experience that sort of atmosphere or those who did not take the time talking to others via forums and such to get some good advice while making their pre travel plans.

We live a half hour drive South of Patong by the uncrowded beaches at Nai Harn and Rawai and we only travel to Patong when we really have to. The North of the Island by Laguna is where a lot of the mega 5 star resorts are located with great beaches lots to do and see without having to venture into Patong. We residents consider Patong something that more laid back visitors and families should at least visit as a daytrip just so they can experience what made Phuket so famous in the beginning of the tourism boom.

Kata & Karon beaches and the communities there are also less crowded then Patong but here in the South we still think that even they are too touristy which is why about 30% of the expat residents all live out this way. Those whishing to visit Phuket should at least take a look at a map of the island while doing their advance travel planning and see where the nicer beaches and communities are located and then pose questions on the board for more detailed information. It is a good idea to also include your proposed travel dates in a post as may locations and activities are seasonal due to the weather.

You can find about any activity that you can think of here such as diving, snorkeling, elephant trekking, deep sea fishing, bungy jumping, sea canoeing, All terain vehicle jungle eco tours and the list goes on. For those of you out there considering a Phuket holiday adventure please keep in mind that the whole island is not like Patong and plan to make the time to do some exploring while you are here. Feel free to post your questions and we will get back to you with some good recommendations based on our personal experiance.

Hi Isadora

Thanks for the greeting and I guess being new here I must be doing something wrong. I tried 3 times compleating all of the steps for the Travel Helper and nothing seemed to register. I posted the thread thinking that as in some forums you have to make a certain amount of posts before you can go up a level with the participation on the boards.

I will try the procedure again and see whay happens.

Regards From Phuket

Richard & Megumi;)
