Hi ,currently in China - Dali, beautiful place but damn the rain! (and damn the food poisoning which nearly wiped me out the last few days!)
Anyway, wanting to go to Tibet maybe the start of september, but have heard from a few people (including a tour guide) that it is 'closed' till the 8th (or maybe 18th) due to a festival. Other tour guides have said otherwise...can anybody confirm the situation?
also any advice on getting a visa and flights from china?

Yes, the problems are due to the anniversary of the T.A.R.

Flights go from Xianggelila. See here for a schedule. See here for permit info.

Since July 1, the Qinghai-Tibet railway will open its tourist traffic. Tibet, the ancient and mysterious region, will start to demonstrate to the whole world its unique charm. For instance, the sceneries like snow-covered plateau, white clouds and snow mountains, swift torrents in valleys, virgin forests, etc, have always enchanted people to have a visit someday.Tibet luxury train tour

Although this will probably change eventually, it looks like foreigners won't initially be allowed on that train from Qinghai to Lhasa.
