I had the following question posed to me this morning and am having trouble coming up with anything; I think I'm easily impressed! Thought you all might be a great place to start. . . .

Hey y’all. Quick question for all the world travelers I know...I’m working on a story called Top 10 Tourist Traps for GQ. I’ve got plenty for the US and Europe but need help for any you can think of in South America, Africa, South Asia, Russia or Australia. Think: the kind of places written up in all the guidebooks, there are expectations of grandiosity and then you get there and it’s total crap. For example: Mannequin Piss in Brussels is just a statue of a kid pissing, but a whole town has thrived off the tourism of people coming to see it. If you have any genius ideas of places I should include, will you please hit me with ‘em? Thanks!

She's also looking for Canada.

The only one I can think of right now in SE Asia, more especifically Thailand, is the tuk-tuk driving you around, taking you to a temple said to be VERY special, then to the silk stores where you get a "bargain" deal on a suit (one day deal, right!), and then to the TAT agencies...the tuk tuk driver get a commission for bringing the tourists to them...

Yeah and the Thai Islands are too I reckon, only good for a party which I suppose is what they boast!

Agra where the Taj Mahal is too, the Taj is magnificent but the city is a dump and you get completely mobbed by crap everyone is trying to sell you!

I think all the hype surrounding bondi beach is a bit of a trap... its nice and all but as far as beaches in sydney or australia go, its crap... and they dont tell you in the guidebooks that they dump raw sewage a couple of hundred metres offshore there either...

Canada's just north of the U.S., actually.

I have to agree with Mannekin Piss. We were standing right next to the peeing thing and couldn't even find it. I'd add in the fake-Jazz places in the touristy areas of New Orleans, too - although that's not really one particular spot. I must say I can't really think of a single thing I regretted going to, though.

hey did anyone say anything about Canada???? Vancouver Canada is one of the MOST beautiful places on this planet! Ofcourse that is being my opinion. I hav been to almost (not all ) almost every country out there and haven't come across any place that I would want live other then Vancovuer. Its true that there are lots of nice place that would be considered cheap compare to Vancouver but in terms of Views, people, landscape, oceans, Mountains, weather, Medical system, jobs, pretty much anything you can think of... its better in vancouver then anyone else.

A perfect example. Where else can you go snow boarding in the winter season.. that is 20 minutes away from city and still come back to the city and still be able to wear a t-shirt and shorts.

anyways guys i guess i am a little off top...... If anyone ever comes to Vancouver and wants a tour....or wants some ideas as to where to visit... I would love to help..! -snip-

PS...Oh yeah.. the most overrated place in the world is Paris. !! Personally i have been there a few times.. i guess its worth while.. to visit onnce but I would never go there if it wasn't for business. !! It seems like everyone smokes there! Being from Canada myself... no one is allowed to smoke inside a building here.. so i am soo use to the non-smoking envoriment i guess..!!

take care
bobby!

Let us not forget that before describing a place as crap, what was going on in the minds of those who wrote about these places in the guidebook. there are lot of things written in guidebooks, most of which are hardly updated to give freshness to places worth visiting...
