I am currently 15 yrs old and am planning to take a gap year after 6th form to travel. I would like to spend 6months travelling in Africa and the remaining 6months in South/Central America. Please can I have advice on how to plan this trip? Thankyou

Hi Guevara,

That's a pretty broad question. I guess the first step in planning a trip like this if figuring out how much money you have to spend. This will give you an idea on how long you can afford and how much you will be able to do and how you will get around.

The other big thing is figuring out what you want to do or where you want to go. Why Africa? What do you want to see there? Animals? Culture? Geography? Answering these questions will start to point out potential destinations that you should target (along with your budget).

Pick up some brouchres or guide books on areas you are thinking about (maybe the Lonely Planet South America on a Shoestring and the African equivelant (not sure what it is called)). This will let you know what countries offer what adventures.

Also, are you planning on travelling independently or doing something with a tour group? There are lots of overland tours of Africa that you might be interested in if you are looking for a group tour.

I'm starting to save up for it now, but I plan to go with a few friends so they can help out financially! I hope to get all the visas sorted, fly over there then just make my own way around. I don't know how easy this is to do? I chose africa because I've always been interested in it and while I'm over there I want to try and help out in the relief effort a bit, so that gives me a few places I want to go. I would love to visit the Congo. I would love to go to Cape Town as I've already been there and it is an amzing place. Another thing I might like to do is go on safari. South/Central America I chose because it's always interested me. I don't know if you have seen/read The Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevara. It documents his travels around South America. I would like to kind of follow the same route and visit the same places (Peru, Chile, Guatemala, Bolivia, Venezuela etc.) but then move on to Central America and visit places such as Cuba and Nicaragua. At the moment I've been looking at brochures and online for places to go but one thing I need to find out is vaguely how much it's going to cost.

For South America, budget around $40 (U.S.) a day, though certain countries will be more and some less. The cheapest I heard anyone of doing South America for was around $30 a day.

I've only been to Tanzania in Africa. There I spent over $100 a day, but I wasn't trying to go cheaply. Try posting a message in the Africa forum to get other users input.
