Hey everyone - thank you all for your replies and help. I ended up going into an information office and gathering a lot of leaflets and ringing every freephone number - the best deal we got was $20 a day for 20 days with no extras, hostel pickup and drop off and a vehicle swap at the ferry so we didnt have to pay for a car on it! This was with quality rental cars - cars arent new but are in reasonable condition! They have offices in Auckland, Wellington, Picton and Christchurch which suited us perfect. So check them out if you are looking.

We took a package with YHA, it included car hire and accommodation vouchers. Depends how long you want the car etc, we took 14 days car hire and got 10 night accommodation free, obviously in YHA hostels (which were all very good) but you can get 21 days car hire which comes with 15 night accomm and I think they do a package with 28 days care hire. They don't give you the same amount of nights as car hire, incase you stop in a place which doesn't have a YHA hostel, therefore missing out on a free night. We ended up having to pay for only 6 nights, and used the vouchers on the expensive hostels and paid cash for the cheap ones, it worked out very good. We dropped off the car in the south island and picked up a new one when we got to Wellington, it's much cheaper to go on the ferry as a foot passenger than taking the car. For the 2 of us, it cost about $1200 between us, so it worked out much cheaper than any of the buses, and we got to choose where we wanted to go. Obvioulsy if there was more in the car, it cost would be cheaper.

Hope that helps

Hi Sander,

The car rental company was quality rental cars. I dont have their leaflet on me right now so I dont have the web address but if you are in NZ the freephone is 1800 680 123 if I remember correctly!

Just did a quick search and found the address The prices quoted seem to be higher but maybe if you contact them and find out - we had to take the car for 20 days to get the rate we did.

Hey Sinky

Ya best to drive mate, there aint to many of us here in NZ so its real easy and the roads are in tip top condition.
You will find heaps of cars in the North Island and about half that in the South Island..the further South you go the less people there are on the roads and as over a million people live in Auckland compared to about 800000 in the entire South get my drift.
When you leave Picton ( gateway to the South Island once you disembarked the ferry from Wellington)travel down the east coast and stop in Kaikoura..lots of tourists/good locals there and good places to can also go whale watching..a trip worth taking.

Enjoy your trip mate.
