Hey,

I leave for Australia on September 13th. I have a working visa and will be gone for about 6 months. I am very excited!!! But everytime I talk about it my friends and family make me feel like I am abandoning them or that I am doing somingthing I shouldn't. I have been researching Australia, NZ, and SE Asia for months before I even decided to go. I know I need to do this and I want to...it is an opportunity of a lifetime. I know my friends and family want me to go but are just going to miss me but this last week has been rough.
Just remind me that i am doing something amazing!

Thanks!!!

hey there!
i totally agree dont let any one stand in the way of your dreams, no matter how hard you try your never going to please everyone but the one person your going to have to live with is your self!!!!
i would recomend travelling in oz to any one, i tell people all the time they just have to do it, no excuses!
i had alot of anxieties before i went but i promise you when you get there you'll forget about everything else and have such a good time and an amazing experience!!
i got back from se asia and oz 4 weeks ago and ive got another flight back out to oz in 5 weks! cant wait!
the only thing i can say is do what you want to do and dont let anything get in the way!!!
hope you have an amazing time as i did and surely will do again!

Mike

im in the same situation as you, but when i think about it all, the people who are trying to restrict me going have never been travelling and probably havn't got the balls to do it.

The VERY worst thing that can happen is that you start your travels and realise you've made a mistake, so you get an early plane back, no problem

At least then you have tried it and decided on your own wether its right for you or not

let me know how you get on!

Good Luck

Be strong and go for it.

I had a friend who was so upset when I said I was going travelling she stopped speaking to me. I could only guess it was the last straw for her - several of our other friends had gone the year before and she may have felt abandoned but its something she has to deal with. I would have had to deal with never knowing what it would be like to travel if I let that influence me.

If your family and friends know you are determined but also that you are being sensible and safe they may feel a lot better about it. Also you can remind them of all the things they will benefit with if you go - souvenirs, postcards, fantastic tales to listen to as well as an excuse to travel themselves - they'll have to visit you wont they?!

They may also not know that everyone is giving you warnings and so on. They may just be airing concerns and not realise that you are getting it in the ear from everyone else as well or that you understand but now support would be welcome!

Good luck sorting them out!;)

You will never find an ideal time to travel, nor a time when everyone or anyone encourages you to go. Our ecomomy/culture has no use for and mistrusts anyone who goes against the grain. Not working 40 hrs/week until retirement goes against the grain. If you want to go, just go and the rest be damned.
You will find, especially if you're going alone that you will get homesick, that's the worst. You can tell if you are in the following way: If you start longing to see people you could never stand when you were close to them you're just homesick, it'll pass. Don't go home until you're sure it's time. You will find that people will be interested in your adventure for a few days at best, and that's mostly just to be polite. Then it's back to the old routine. If after a few days you find yourself wondering why on earth you came back home so soon, you came back too early.
It takes a long time to really learn to travel, if that's what you want to do. You'll make a lot of mistakes that first time, but you learn.
