Actual conversation from this morning:

(Neal in Ireland): "I'm working at the bar tonight - Ireland is playing France!"

(Me in Montreal, stifling yawn) "That's nice."

I still think Canada's going to win the World Cup. And as they score the winning goal, everyone in the stadium will look up to see a flock of pigs heading south for the winter.

I think that was the under 21 squads, actually...

Yup, we USA'ers have never been particularly good at kicking the round ball.

Didn't your women's team kick some serious butt a few years ago. Obviously, all I remember of it was the footage of that girl ripping off her top.

Canada doesn't have a chance in hell of getting into the World Cup finals. Too bad, soccer is a great game.

Let me guess... A Losers Cup Play-Off Canada vs. USA

Yeah, the US did have a very good women's team but several of the team members hung up their jerseys after the last Olympics.

England are terrible. They don't have a clue what they are doing. God help us if we get brazil or Argentiana should we get through. I have Irish relatives so well done to N Ireland. Unlucky Republic, that was harsh. As I am an Arsenal fan though... Thierry Henry =GENIUS!

Which is really too bad. Soccer is a great sport that really should be supported more in north america. For a while after the US women's team won the Olympics, there was a surge of soccer enthusiasm (especially in little girls), but that died down pretty quick. That team had the potential to really inspire a lot of people.

Awwww, its a cruel game, always has been.

Congrats to France who took a bit of a pounding, soaked up the pressure and came through. One day Ireland will have a Thierry Henry.

I grew up in the north of Ireland and i hate seeing them win anything (purely political socialisation obviously, plus a large amount of bitterness, i love it though;)), imagine my confusion when i found out they had beaten the english! It was like having my accelerator and brakes hit at the same time.

Sam I Am, great rant mate!! Loved reading that....Massagefella, hang on pal, i heard that the UN will be dropping supplies over west London for all you poor souls.

I owe my country for a happy life (maybe i could repay it with a couple of decent goalscorers).

Peace Out.

I'm utterly pleased with Holland's chances at the moment :) They seem to be playing very nicely from what I can tell from this side of the world. Here's hoping this will be the big one !!!!

As for my 'other' country, Australia, we can only hope we manage to beat whatever South American country we are confronted with. We've won the group, now it will most likely be Uruguay, Colombia or (my personal choice) Chile that we need to deal with to get in. It would certainly be very good for Australian soccer to get into the World Cup! Fingers crosseed :)
