From memory: With a backpacker card (YHA/VIP/...?) you'll get something like 15% discount on coaches. In New South Wales and Victoria (basically the stretch Brisbane to Melbourne), you get 40% off train prices if you book more than a week in advance, 50% off if you book more than two weeks in advance. And there are special train passes only available for backpackers that cover that entire stretch - for a lot of money - but which often work out cheaper if you do it all. *browses through his history* There we go: Rail Passes. Cairns to Melbourne by train (one way, but you can get off as often as you like) costs $393.80 - you'll want to compare to adding up the prices for individual stretches though, as it isn't always cheaper. (I think it mostly depends on the number of stops you make.) this would be a good starting point to look up the fares.

An East Coast Greyhound pass might be worth your while. Word on the grapevine has it that it costs about $200 and is valid for 6 weeks for you to jump on and off as you please anywhere up and down the coast?
