"And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

What does this have to do with travel? If you are looking for forums to chat about how much you dislike America I am sure there are other web-sites that might be more condusive to this. There are all sorts of hate forums that might be more suitable to these slanderous and cynical threads.

If you have something to say just say it! Don't use random quotes, taken out of context to try and make your point. Be your own person and state things as you see them.

nothing do to with travel - that's why off topic forum.

I don't dislake america - but I do dislake it's government (as well as all governments) - and that outrageous quatation support my world view that those who are at power do hate and are cynical about the population they rule over (especially about the poorer once).

I do say what I think (that's why I wrote "I hope that...) and genarally to substantiate my opinions I do tend to support them by quatations.

Careful with this, our forfathers died to allow us to speak openly and criticise the Government in any forum, and any where, under ANY circumstance we wish.

always the double standard - if we want to praise America would you tell us to go to Right Wing, Conserv-Limbaugh sites?

Barbara Bush is out of touch with reality - it's not the first time she's said something rediculous (remember her "why would I waste my beautiful mind" comment about the war in Iraq?). But she's also not a member of government - although one could argue she certainly represents the government, and not very well at that.

Yes, the Off Topic Foum was designed for travel and non-travel threads alike. It was meant as a way for members to get to know each other, discuss whatever they like, and have fun. Because this forum does not appear in the Forum List on the home page, and it's topics are not displayed in the "All Threads" forum, member's curiosity is what brings them to Off Topic.

You can say anything you like. But, as it is in the other forums, certain behaviors are considered unacceptable. Slanderous and abusive comments, especially if they are directed at any particular member will not be allowed. But, a bit more leeway is given in Off Topic than anywhere else. So far, in this particular thread, no one has crossed the line. I am sure it will remain that way. Like each other, don't like each other, agree, disagree - that's part of being an online community - but please just leave any personal attacks out of "your" replies. ("Your" meaning all who choose to post in this or any other thread.)

In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of
evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost
everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move to
Houston."

Then she added: "What I’m hearing which is sort of
scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is
so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

"And so many of the people in the arena here, you
know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she
chuckles slightly) is working very well for them."

-Oh, the arena is one of the football stadiums that has been converted and is giving shelter and aid to the homeless and the vagabonds that were living in New Orleans. (No Chuckle). Great to see how people are coming together and giving aid to each other. I guess I kind of picture this if London had been flooded and the people of either Dublin or Paris or Rotterdam or Brussels, maybe, were to open up their borders and homes to the evacuees. Its aprroximately 356 miles from NO to Texas City. This is how far from home some of the evacuees from New Orleans are going to try and survive and maybe find a new way of life. And those who were living on the street:( are probably more than happy to be getting some much needed assistance. Possibly a new outlook on life.

I'm with IronChef on this one. I'm sick to death of people's mindless, misguided, broken-record sounding, "hate-style" rants about the US and George Bush.

Why do they have nothing to say on the military governments in Africa who are directly contributing to approx 40,000 people starving to death everyday? Or how about the Communist government in China that is still locking up and torturing people who disagree with it? Hmmm, I hear that women in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to work, drive a car, or go out in public without a male chaperone - great freedom they've got. The world is full of death, destruction and injustices, but none of that seems to matter to those filled with hate towards the US.

quite right - I fully agree that all governments are corrupted, murderous and all of them should be abolished (to repeat myself in so many posts) and replaced by the democratic and just socio-economic system based on satisfying needs of all the humanity.

Now, those butchers in Africa and around the world are armed and supported by the superpowers and large international corporations to terrorise their local population in order to exploit cheap labour and natural resources of those countries - and further enrich the world dominating countries.

Religions in the present society (in Saudi Arabia and everywhere else) do have a similar function - enstill social and political order for the benefit of those who are at power.

It's striking that the wife of a former president and a mother of the present president of the dominating world power (claiming to be democratic and supporting democracy around the world) says something which clearly contradicts this misconception.

Actually, no. Our forefathers did not die to allow us to be disrespectful of others or disregard social norms and rules. Our forefathers did die to allow other members of society to talk back to us, however. As a foreigner I can tell you that this outrageously simple interpretation of "freedom of speech" is what gives the West (the US in particular) a very bad social reputation.

Quite frankly, to me, Barbara Bush sounds like an old nut. I bet you there's a million old nuts out there that will say the same unthoughtful things. But, is this anymore unthoughtful than what Kanye West said about racism in the US government? That, to me, seemed very disrespectful to the white rescue workers & adminstrators working 18hr shifts to rescue the Katrina survivors. It's all a sign of the tension that people are under rightnow. I wouldn't take it as anything more than simple words.

I always chuckle at political science discussions. I wish they would come up with a field call Applied Politics. Utopian theories of democratic social management systems are great. But don't really ground their theories in human nature (or more accurately insufficently).
