Hey everyone! My friend and I (2 women)are planning a trip to south America, starting in Caracas in the begining of October and then through Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador all the way to Quito (by bus), which should be the final destination.
We'll have a month and a half or maybe more to spare, but don't really know yet what we are going to see and do. I would like to spend some time on the beaches (maybe Cartagena, Isla Margherita..) and discover some cities (like Bogota).., to feel the vibe of the south american countries, to have fun,...
Would you tell me which are the things and places worth seeing and what we shouldn't miss?
Thans for your time and effort
The beaches in Cartagena are unremarkable but better ones are close by-look to Taganga-it's the old city that's the real attraction.
Take your time in Quito, it's a lovely city and especially the old town.
My favorite coffe shop there was Café Sutra (not in the old town though), you get endless bowles of free popcorn over there
I haven't been to the other countries yet, but I'm going in February
Have a great trip!!
I was in Cartagena about 1 month ago.
I went to Bocagrande in Cartagena and the beach there was not good!
If you want a good beach I recommend to take a day trip out of Cartagena to the Rosaro islands by boat. There you will find tranquil and clean beaches with clear and warm water.
I would NOT recomend Venezuela and Colombia for two Girls, both are not safe.
Cartagena is a very nice City and I never heard that it is unsafe.
Bogota has the beatyful Gold museum,a must if you go there, but walking around?I really dont know...
Quito has good aereas, inexpensiv but safe hostals,I like Ecuador very much, bin there 2-3 times yearly.I travel alone and I feel safe there.
Marlis is right...Caracas always has been dangerous..take care...going by bus from Venzeula into Colombia is very difficult in a dangerous and remote border region, flying from one country to another is ok, in Colombia recommend you fly from one city to another..it is advised bus travel between cities can be risky. Once you are in Quito you will be ok and will be able to bus around Ecuador at will and into Peru if you wish.
The cities of Colombia now far less crime... Bogota, Medellin, Baranquilla and of course Cartegena, relatively safe, use common sense and take taxis to your destination evenings and nights. Cali is still pretty violent..Drug trade.
Colombian people are among the most hospitable and generous in Latin America.
