This thread is marked as being about Chile

Hi there!
We are planning a four weeks trip to Chile in January and are currently brooding over the question of the right vehicle. We thought of a camping kind of pick up. More expansive but including overnight stays
Does anybody know how this is accepted in Chile? Are you alowed to park your car somewhere and just sleep there? Or are you restricted to camping grounds? (That would change calculations a lot...)

Thanks for your help!!!

I was hitchhiking once from Calama (in the Atacama desert) to Santiago and I met a German man and his son and they had rented a pick up truck and where driving the length of the country camping. They always used the back of the pickup truck to sleep in. There are many many places specifically for camping and also many places where you can just park your truck and sleep in it if you want, for example the beach in Tongoy people just camp on the beach and often have their vehicles there too. In the country side people are very friendly and often for free or for a small fee will let you park your truck and camp nearly anywhere. All you have to do is ask for permission or perhaps offer some type of gift in return (as a thank you).
