Quito is a place where people seem to take themselves somewhat seriously.
They're not unfriendly but neither are they overly demonstrative.
Streets are safe in the daytime and if you live @ sea level like I do you'll feel short of breath for a few days upon arriving.

hiya, thanks yeh av spent 2 weeks in quito now am about to leave. yeh the poeple do take themselves seriously, some are really friendly but u get the occasional shout of "gringo" as you walk thru the streets, which is annoying. there arent many tourists here and you stand out like a sore thumb wen on the streets. there are some nice places around to visit and the view of the mountains from quito are spectacular!! but crime is a definate proble, especially on buses and trams during the day, and you`re a fool if you go out at night cos youre just asking to get mugged. but its worth a visit - recommend Secret Garden hostel in old quito, Jose Antepara street, near Los Rios - fantastic food and clean freindly facilities for $5 a night!! check it out
