With the no-frills flights getting more and more popular these days, can anyone advise please if travelling Bangalore to Mumbai which takes more than 24hours in the train is worth going? Has anyone tried this? Any recommendations?
I will be in South India for 2 weeks (only) travelling Bangalore > Mumbai > Goa > Kerala > Pondichery > Bangalore and a stop over in Chennai.
Travelling time 16Sept to 2nd Oct.
The train ride from Bombay to Bangalore is exactly 24 hours on Udyan Express. Take a look at www.indianrail.gov.in for the schedules and fares. I remember it leaving in the morning and getting to Bangalore 24 hours later. It's not bad at all. Make sure you get a 2nd class A/C ticket. I have done this trip quite a few times and have had no problem. Hope this helps.
Your replies, certainly helped to clear the clouds (worrying clouds!).
Anybody else travelling to South India?
The trains in India are great and cheap as chips, but if you have two weeks only I suggest you fly as much as possible.
Its such a huge country and there's so much to see you will struggle to see everything you want if you spend days at a time sat on trains. That said you should do some train rides as its a really interesting experience, especially in the general class where you have to wrestle to get a seat!
I spent 6 weeks there earlier this year and had a great time. I wouldn't spend too much time in Bangalore though, not really that much to see or do there.
