Planning on visiting Riga in October but since Tallinn doesn`t seem too far away thought might visit there as well.
Since all the web-sites I`ve been to so far have been fairly useless does anyone know
a) if there are any direct trains between the two cities;
b) roughly how much tickets cost
Also as a side note, since Russia doesn`t seem too far away either, does anyone know if you need a visa to visit there from the UK.
1 (and 2) - No. There are very few useful trains in the Baltics, and bar a single summer train weekly between Vilnius and Riga, no direct train connections between the Baltic capitals. There are howevere lots of buses (Eurolines run several a day) which are easy and quite cheap, although i can't remember how much i paid. Also, assuming you actually get out of the city to teh edge, it is an EXTREMELY easy route to hitch hike on, and can be done in half the time of the bus (and for free).
For Russia, everybody needs a visa, and regulations are strict and beuarocracy long winded. You will need an invitation as well, although the best place to get a visa for least hassle (and quickly) is in the Baltic countries. For more information, check out www.waytorussia.net (i think) for Russian visa info and legalities. It might look long winded, but its worth knowing as penalties for fecking up in Russia can be very strict.
