Hi,
If the train is expensive, I would strongly suggest taking the Eurolines bus. This is their website: www.eurolines.com. As far as Naples goes, safety is a bit of an issue there so you might want to make contact with a local prior to getting there. Hope this helps.

Have you bought the lonely planet guidebook allready? You will find all practical info in there including all pricing!!!

Napels is not dangerous! Many travellers go there, don't worry. As in every large city just watch your luggage/bags.

Last time I was in Europe (2002), trains were indeed expensive... But a couple of friends visited Germany this summer and told me that trains and flights are very cheap now... Except for Swizerland.

Check the prices for the train Milano-Nice... I believe it's direct :)
Cheers!

Hey

I searched google for cheap accommodation in Milan about 2 years ago - found a good little hotel right in the centre (about 2 minutes from the train station). I don't have the details to hand - lost a lot when the laptop crashed but if you can spare about an hour to trawl google just type in cheap accommodation milan. I think I paid about 50 euros a night but breakfast included and the staff were totally fab - all spoke enough english to help when I had questions and were polite and friendly no matter what time of day it was. The price may be a bit much for you to pay but do weigh it up against catching trains or buses into the city for your visit - it may work out better to pay more for your room and save on getting in to the city. Sorry I don't have more specific help (like the name of the hotel!) and but I hope you have a good trip.

Good luck
Cara.

Bologna i normally end up going to the tourist place and getting their sheaf of info and finding a cheap hotel as either their isn`t a hostel or its so small it fills quickly (cant remember which). Cant help with Milan, sorry, as i stay with friends, but for both Milan and Bologna you could try the free exchanges like www.couchsurfing.com or www.hospitalityclub.net and you may well find somewhere for free. Milan to Nice by train is quite a nice journey anyway, as between Genoa and Nice it follows the coast all the way with many great views. A slightly cheaper way by train is to buy a ticket Milan - Ventimiglia (the border, and often including a change in Genoa, but the same for Nice) and then a Ventimiglia - Nice ticket in Vent., which should work out cheaper. V-Nice has local service every 30mins, plus a number of longer distance trains, so its dead easy
