Travel Forums Asia How to get to vietnam from china

Hi all,
I am currently in Dali in Yunnan, south china and will be heading to Vietnam in 2 weeks.

Could anyone inform me as to whether it is possible to get a train direct from Yangshou/Guilin to Hanoi?? Or even a bus would do.

Also, could you suggest a few places that would be cool to go to in vietnam. We are planning to do Hanoi, Sapa, Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Regards,
Kev

There is a train. I am planning to take it the other way, but I know it stops in Nanning, and goes across the border at friendship gate. I am pretty sure it runs twice a week. check out the link, which is for vientam's train system, but should have info on the train.

Let me ask you a question while I am at it. How hard is it to get train tickets for the chinese trains. I am worried I am going to get stuck in nanning...

Kev, there is definately a train from Nanning to Hanoi and it goes every Monday and Friday.

Dave, Am currently in Nanning before travelling to Hanoi and had to buy the ticket in Nanning. Didnt have much trouble getting the ticket as the lady did find an english speaker when she couldnt understand the details of our request (although she did understand the general details) but i would advise going in the evening cos the daytime is madness in the ticket office.

the train thing is all good but i think its from nanning and not guilin or yangshou. you've got the idea with places to visit in vietnam visit sa pa and ha long bay,a nd from hanoi get a open bus tour ticket to sai gon, stopping at the places you've mentioned hue, da nang, hoi an, nha trang, add mui ne to the list (fishing port and sand dunes), then to sai gon. the ticket shouldnt cost more than $22 the locals use these buses too by the way.

happy travelling...

hey guys,
ill will be in kunming in the yunnan province within the next day or so. anyone know the best way to get into vietnam from there. I was assuming train, but from reading the replies in this thread is seems that the trains only go from nanning. Is there a bus service?
cheers,
