Had posted this in the South America forum accidentally, so I'm reposting here...hopefully, someone might be able to help.
I've never really booked a flight before that hasnt been at least a couple of months in advance of a trip.
I'm going to South America in the New Year and I've booked my flight to Peru. I dont really want to book my flight out of South America yet, because I just want to get there, see how things go, and make up my mind pretty much at the last minute.
I'm worried though that I'll end up paying something astromonical if I do this. I'm flying on to New Zealand, and the online fares that lan.com are quoting at the moment are in and around the $1,300 mark.
Has anyone had any experience with booking last minute flights? What's the likelihood of finding a decent fare that won't break the bank. I'm used to just booking with low fares airlines really here in Europe, and one or two flights to the States. That's about it. No idea what way it works anywhere else.
Any advice would be really appreciated!
Ev - since you reposted this thread here, I have removed the thread in CA/SA forum. Thought i would let you know!
Based on my experience in Peru, I pretty much got the same price for plane tickets whether I had bought it way in advance or at the very last minute. This was Lima-Cuzco. I dont really know about the rest of the countries but South America doesn't really have the deep-discounted small airlines like Asia and Europe. Maybe someday...hopefully.
Thanks Anne. So, you think fares dont flucutate as much as they do here in Europe?
As for flying around IN South America, I don't think it matters much if you book 3 weeks in advance or 3 days. I did have trouble once trying to book within 72 hours out of La Paz though. As for getting on to NZ, that might be a different story. You might want to try a company like airtreks.com as you can book your flight and then change the dates when you get there, though I'm not sure if you can book just one flight with them. You might also want to check with a flight consolidator near the last minute. I think you can just google, flight consolidators, south america.
Not sure if that helped, but have fun!
flights are expensive out of south america because there is not a relatively high level of competetion.organise a multi stop from home with a flexible change date.
internal fights you really dont need advance bookins and they rarely change flight prices. as for la paz they have a tendency to come up with an excuse of 'anything' to cancel if very few are travelling on the flight.
