Hi I am a new member of a community online. Would anyone like to give me some feedback about what is like belonging to this forum? The benefits and a basic overview of how it has helped you keep sane whilst being so far away from home?

Natalia

Hope it gives you some idea of what our community here is like. Looking forward to hearing what you think about it. :)

Hi Natalia,

Welcome to TP! You'll find that we're all a very friendly bunch here. Lots of laughter and good times and all the yummy stuff. As for how it keeps us sane away from home... well, you just have to look at the people around here and you'll feel right at home. :)

Hey Natalia!

I have never "belonged" to an online forum before TP. The ones that I had checked out before finding TP had been either boring or just plain un-stimulating. But then, my experience is limited at best... I can say that you will find very helpful and freindly people here. When they call it an online "community" - they mean it!!!! You can find answers to you own travel questions, help others with their dilemmaes, and just have fun - check out the Off Topic forum for a taste. If you are the type of person who enjoys sending and receiving post cards - we have a thread about that too. I have a feeling that you won't feel sorry that you signed up. Cruise the site. That will give you an idea of what we are all about. TP has 40,000+ members and that alone says something about being a "community"! ;)

Online communities geeky ! ....
Ok, I could never pull off being angry on demand.

I went away from forums for a long time and what brought me back was a photography forum I participate in. Very different community with completely different people. I wrote about it in the other thread. I thought I'd mention it because one of the first people I ran into was an incredible artist who very much used the forum to "keep sane".

The story is, she's from Argentina or someplace in South America. I'm not sure exactly where. We've exchanged only a handful of words in two years. She being a native Spanish speaker and I know no Spanish. But we did communicate through the visual language. Her husband had just passed away. And she posted a dozen or so photo/artworks exploring her feelings during that period. Her sense of loneliness, isolation, smallness, fear, and then a while later, her re-emergence from her grief to face the world. Most of the "critiques" she received where not really critiques but messages of love and support that we as a community wished to send to her. The interesting thing is that we all spoke many different languages, were spread out all over the world, slept, worked and posted at all different times, but we all shared our love for her. I believe it was important for her to knew how much we all cared for her and that somebody, somewhere, 24hrs of the day cared about her.

I used to wonder whether I was spending too much time online (one of the reasons I went away), now a days I sit daily in a WiFi room with big windows, sunshine, trees, a cup of coffee and a kazillion other students on their laptops. There's no difference to me between playing hangman with someone face to face and online. Mind you, there's a lot of online activity that's unhealthy, but I don't think TP is one of them.

Isa has addressed something which I would like to say. After TP, I find no where to go (exclude the real world)...
