Hiya,

I'm going to be in Penang on Christmas day - I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what to expect? Has anyone spent Christmas in Malaysia before?

Hi Tabi, that depends on what are you looking for. Gurney Walk in Penang would offer some fiesta in night bars and pubs (same thing goes to Bintang Walk in KL); Why don't you consider taking a short visit to Singapore which they used to celebrate Christmas splendidly especially Orchard Rd?

I personally prefer to spend Christmas in Sibu, Sarawak - a parade held by Churches, with candles assigned to every public and we can just join in the parade and get to know each others! If you are chanced to bump into any district villagers in Sabah (many Sino-Kadazans, one of the tribes with the largest population in Sabah are Christians); I went twice and they would serve any visitors with home-made Tapai (of grains or plants' roots) and dansed along with them in their traditional musics and Sumazau Danse...

Chinese New Year would be even greater in Penang, Tabi.

We were last year in Penang for new year. Our trip took us tu Singapore for 3 days and then to Penang for a week.
We liked the trip very much because of the following:
- Food - you will find lots of excellent stuff here, I've heard that some people go there from KL in order to have fine dinner. And this is cheep
- Temples - visit Thai and Burmese temples and others, leave Kek Lok Si as a last to visit
- Fruit farm - taste durian safely and make yourself familiar, how all the delicious stuff grows
- Spice garden - smell and enjoy it
If you like snorkelling - go to Langkawi Coral

You can see some pictures of our last year's trip here:
