Has anyone been to SL since the tsunami? If so, can you recommend places/things to see? Is it possible to get rooms w/out booking in advance or are there not many places reopened (esp in the south beaches - Hikkaduwa).
Is it ok to go by yourself as a female traveller? What's the harassment level - ie - low (Thailand) or high (India)??
I was there in late November. The tsunami devastation is there to see and the recovery effort is slow for the general population. The hotels have made a good effort and i would say things are normal on this front.
Alone and female is OK except at the more touristy beach resorts where the local 'beach boys' will try to hit on you. I would recommend a good guide/ driver cum protector who will smooth things out for you. Take the hassle out of negotiating with the local red tape etc.
I recommend Sunil Jayasinghe. He was truly great. Took care of everything from airport pick up. Also answers e-mails promptly ( not a sri lankan strong point) so he stands out. Look up www.sunilj.com where i found him. Very reasonable.
Would recommend trip tp Sri Lanka despite all the events of the past. So much to see. The museum at Polonnaruwa is a must see. Don't miss the ancient bronze of the ugly woman !
