Volunteering in SE Asia

Travel Forums Asia Volunteering in SE Asia

I'm going to SE Asia in January for several months and would like to do some volunteering while over there. Maybe 3-4 weeks of volunteering. I have found several organizations that place volunteers in Thailand, Loas, Vietnam, Nepal, ect.. But I would like to get some input from people other than the people on the certain organization's web site. So, if anyone has had good or bad experiences volunteering in SE Asia, please let me know. Also, is it necessary to organize the volunteering before I go, or could I just show up, travel a bit find a nice organization that needs some help and join in?

its pretty straightforward getting vol. work in thailand due to the tsunami, you could just turn up in places like koh phi phi there are a few organisation doing good work down there, hi phi phi being one that stands out. you might want to mix and match, organise some from home for a week or so, travel and just turn up in some places. i guess it really depends on what kind of vol work you're looking for.

happy travelling...

hey, i was looking to do volunteer work aswell, but all the companies on the web charge you a fortune (in admin fees) to do it and then you're normally tied in for at least a month, a few of my friends who have already been to se asia said they just found somewhere when they got out there, they are crying out for help over there, they wont charge you a penny to do it, and its up to you how much you want to do and when. i want to go to an orphanage in thailand so i will definately be doing it this way
hope that helped

There are two main advantages of going through a (reputable) agency:

1. Some agencies do actually reinvest the money they receive from you into the communities in which they work. You should be able to gauge the authenticity of the company by how much information is on their site. Key things to look for are how much they are charging and details of recent projects, donations etc. Any trustworthy agency will have many referrals from previous volunteers that you can contact directly for more info.

2. Agencies provide continuity for the communities they work in. If everyone just randomly showed up expecting to work for one or two weeks then no one would be able to plan any worthwhile projects.

Even if you don’t go through an agency I’d really recommend that you arrange something before you leave home. That way you can be sure that the work that you do will be of benefit to someone other than yourself! Good luck with the search
