JAKARTA : Two explosions went off Saturday in the popular Indonesian resort island of Bali with injuries reported, El Shinta radio reported.

One explosion occurred in the Jimbaran area of Bali in front of a restaurant, the radio said, quoting witnesses.

Oh, that's terrible. Some friends of mine just left last week for Bali and are staying in Jimbaran, but not near the area where the blasts were... not much known yet as to the extent it seems.

JAKARTA : At least eight people, including four foreigners, were killed when two near simultaneous explosions went off Saturday in the popular Indonesian resort island of Bali, radio reports said Saturday.

The first explosion occurred at 1200 GMT in the Jimbaran area of Bali in front of beachside coffee shops, local policeman Nyoman Suwita told AFP.

ElShinta radio quoted an eye-witness identified as Bagas as saying he saw eight bodies at the Jimbaran blast site, including four foreigners and two Indonesian women.

He also told ElShinta more than 30 people were wounded.

Minutes later another blast also took place in front of coffee shops at the Matahari Square shopping center in the popular beach resort area of Kuta, Suwita said.

An eye-witness there told ElShinta he saw many body parts, including an arm lying in the ruins of a cafe.

The blasts came less than two weeks before the third anniversary of the bomb attacks on two Kuta nightclubs that killed 202 people, many of them foreign tourists including 88 Australians, and wounded hundreds of others.

"The explosion in Bali is reported to have taken place in a very crowded area, so if obviously it is confirmed to be a bomb, then it is aimed at causing as much casualties and ... as many victims as possible," foreign ministry spokesman Marty Natalegawa told the BBC.

But he said the blasts appear to be less powerful than the 2002 nightclub bombings.

"At this time we are very much trying to secure the area, and trying to save those who have been injured," he said, adding that the two blasts occurred about 10 minutes apart.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had called for tighter security in the world's most populous Muslim nation during September and October, saying these appeared to be favoured months for terror acts.

He said the possibility of more attacks remained real since two of the key bombers accused of being behind the Bali attacks, Malaysians Azahari Husin and Noordin Mohammad Top, remain on the loose.

Both are believed to have played key roles in the Bali bombings, the August 2003 bomb blast at the Marriott hotel in Jakarta and the suicide van bomb blast in front of the Australian embassy in September.

All the attacks are blamed on Jemaah Islamiyah which is believed to be the Southeast Asian arm of Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.

Three militants have been sentenced to death for their part in the Bali bombings and two others are serving life sentences for the attacks.

No doubt it will be the work of suicide bombers acting in the name of God who are now in heaven reaping the seeds of their brave acts.

Good on you fella's

So sorry so terrible, I'm sad and upset :(

On the evening it happened, we tried to contact my brother-in-law who works in Kuta, Bali. It was so difficult to reach him. But finally we got an SMS message from him saying he's OK and that he almost had dinner at Raja restaurant, just about 10 minutes before the bomb exploded!

A family of my nextdoor neighbour was killed in the blast in Jimbaran

I'm curious that the suicide bombers were just too naive innocent people who were in need of money, and someone offered them money for their poor family in condition that they would do the suicide bombing. That kind of "persuasion" happens here to people in desparate need of money for food. :(

Are you alright now with the bombings in Bali? Bombings can happen everywhere...when the gap between the poor and the rich is getting wider and wider in the social-economic structure of capitalism...anything can happen, agree?

I just wonder the globalization is getting the world smaller and weaker instead...it seems many poeple are not well prepared for it as influentials are hidden everywhere...I remembered many agreed to have those terrorists captured in few earlier posts (so do I) but just see what would happen next...the terrorism was getting stronger and stronger...an interesting fact shows most recent inccidents (plus natural disaster)were more likely happening in SE Asia islands, (Sipadan, Malaysia; Boracay, Phillipines; Phuket, Thailand and Bali, Indonesia...)

The VISA would definitely get stricter in future.

Just do what we can to make a better world.

Muslim terrorists want the tourists to leave and cause the economy dry up. I'll return to Asia often, if I don't then the terrorists win!
