I am flying into Beijing on 1st of November and will have seven days before moving on.
Does anyone have any idea on good places to stay?
As its our first stop a little bit of luxury might not be a bad idea?
Any fun places to go clubs bars?
And cool sights during the day, bar the great wall?

Any help appreciated.

cheers guys

Ben

there's a reasonably good list of places to stay and entertainment venues here:

I just spent 9 days in Beijing. We stayed at okay hostel called Jinghau Hostel. It was about 30 yuen a night. We went to..Tianamin square ( I know I spelled it wrong) quite a bit. We hiked a unrestored portion of the Great Wall which is the way to go. We also went to the Hard Rock Cafe, Mao's tomb, the Summer Palace, etc. It was great! I met a lot of people at the hostel. The Silk Market is the place to shop for clothes! Don't pay over 50 Yuen for puma shoes, 170 yuen for a northface coat, or...you know what, just don't pay that much for anything. Stick to a price and leave if you don't like it. They will come after in the end. If they don't, then you bid too low. But that's okay, they are selling the same stuff next door. Try not to try anything on, because they don't give back your clothes lightly! And just have fun! Don't be afraid be become a Beijinger yourself. Hope you enjoy.:)

Where did you go? I am going to be in Beijing in 3 weeks time. My guide book lists one good hike of unrestored wall (can not remember right now where it is, but the guide book is Lonely Planet Trans Siberian train journey). I thought I would see if you had a different location that I might think about as well.

i just got back fr china; i spent abt 9 days there...

You can opt to stay in Red Lantern or Feiying IYH.
Feiying IYH is near to LRT and is very convenient for bus as well. It cost abt Y30/bed.

Pay a visit to Tiananmen, Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, Forbidden Palace, Summer Palace, Lama temple, take a bicycle ride to Hutong & Great Wall is a must!

If you plan to go to Badaling Great Wall, just take the public bus, it is just few Yuans, you can enjoy as long as you want.

Oh, if you have a student pass, bring along, it save a lot.

Temple of Heaven is close for maintenance until next year, so forget abt it.

Have a wonderful trip! :)

was just in beijing 2 weeks ago, spent 5 days there, stayed with a friend and she brought us to this place called 'hou hai', at night there's plenty of night music, live bands, it's by a lake so it's really pretty to just linger and have a nice dinner. if u travel by the subway, u could also go to 'wang fu jing' station, it's a shopping walk-street, could find some local food in one of the streets and some good bargains for souvenirs, etc. have fun! =)

stayed at the far east international hostel which is pretty central, can be difficult finding somewhere central, and dont let the hostel part of the name full you, most of these places are like hotels. the price ranges from 45 upwards for a bed in a dorm of 6 or more for a room with the bathroom, t.v air con (you wouldnt need it mayber if you turn up the temperature...)

happy days
