I need some advice. I'm in Malaysia at the minute and I've just heard about the terrible bomb attacks in Bali.
Our plan was to fly out of Singapore on December 2nd and stay in Bali until 28th December before flying onto Sydney. Is this safe? I mean, Bali at christmas is going to be really busy? I've had a look on the UK Foreign Office website and it pretty much says not to travel in Indonesia, but it also says that about some places I've already been to and they were fine! So I'm a bit confused and thought I would turn you all you helpful guys and get your opinions/advice.
Should you still go to Bali? well no-one can make that decision for you, I think it's a personal one. If I were in the same situation I would go as my opinion is that the terrorists want to drive tourists away from Bali which will ruin people's livelihoods and in turn put pressure on the Indonesian government to give in to their demands.
The FCO isn't advising against travel to Indonesia - the travel advice has not changed since before the bombs at the weekend. The website says that travellers should be cautious, but it has stopped short of a blanket ban!
Not really much help, but thought I'd give you my opinion!
In December it should be OK.
Yes Bali around christmas is always busy.
If you ask if a place is safe or not, such things could happen anywhere. It even happened in London, so we really can't tell
Like Donna said I guess the decision is up to you but I'm still proceeding with my plans to visit Bali for a month in March. Staying clear of Kuta and spending your time relaxing in a more remote part of Bali is always an option.
my advice: stick to your plans...u dont have to stay in Kuta beach area (if that is what you fear-anyway what is there to see in Kuta, but nightlife and Kuta Cowboys!), u can always head for Ubud or Sanur...maybe even Nusa Tiga. It is always a calculated risk...anywhere.
You could spend most of your holiday on Nusa Lembongan, an island about 1-2 hours by boat from Bali.
I have stayed there 3 times in the past 10 years and it is so laid back and friendly.
keep on going to your plan. Bombing just like a "plain crash" !!!
Thanks for all your replies guys, but we've decided to give Bali a miss. The main reason for this is because we did not want our families and friends at home to be worrying about us while we were there (and a month of worrying would feel like an age)! Plus we didn't want to feel like we were looking over our shoulders and constantley being on guard, that's not what travelling is all about.
So, instead, we fly tomorrow morning from Singapore to Perth. We're so excited and can hardly wait. We are staying with some relatives of mine who are going to help us buy a car and then we are planning to drive along the coast, stopping in Sydney for a few months to work (and claw back some of our non existant budget) and then carry on up the coast to Cairns!
Bring on the road trip!
