I'm planning a 5 month backpacking trip to Europe next year. I've never been to a hostel and I have a very important question; How big are lockers usually? Could you fit an entire backpack in one?

In my experience, generally no. The system in most hostels (that I've been to anyway) is that you stake out a nice piece of floor next to your bed and trust that no one wants to steal your dirty clothes. Most hostels then either offer smaller lockers for your "important stuff" (bring your own lock), or you can leave it in a safe at the reception. You might find some places where you can lock an entire backpack (I haven't been to Europe in while), but I would plan for the alternative.

I would say its about 50/50 on hostels that have lockers big enough for backpacks but most of them are good about having some sort of good locker system or rack under the bed to lock up your bags and belongings. I would not worry about it too much, it is generally pretty safe in hostels, I have never had anything stolen in a hostel and I leave out cameras, souveniers, all sorts off stuff all the time. Its the written rule...DONT MESS WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S STUFF... Karma is a bad thing! and what goes around comes around.
If you already know what hostels you are staying at while in Europe, just email the hostel and ask how big their lockers are, most will reply right away. Happy Trails!
