travel links - also do you run a travel site

Travel Forums General Talk travel links - also do you run a travel site

Hi there

I am soon to be starting an online resource of travel links where people ARE ALLOWED to plug their own businesses as well as supply other quality links relating to travel.

Rather than starting a really big thread, can people message me with their links and up to 8 words that they would like to accompany the link. I will then vet the site and decide when to put it online.

Also, if you submit a link, please send me your email address if you would like me to let you know if you got accepted. You will not go onto a mailing list.

Finally, this is a free service and it is not a link exchange. Plug what you like - shamelessly. It is all in the name of good travel!

Thanks
Becci Jackson

Actually, you're allowed to plug your business and provide links to alternate travel sites here. The only catch, I believe, is that you can't join JUST to plug yourself. I've certainly visited a few sites of regular TP members and found them interesting and helpful.

I think that if people are given free reign to shamelessly plug themselves, you'll end up with a pretty biased and - in the process - dishonest site. There's a lot to be said about keeping a site integral - especially when it comes to trusting the advice of the people who post on it.

That's my two cents' worth!

Hi there
Perhaps I didn't make myself clear enough. I did say I would vet the sites in my post. Naturally I won't be letting people promote sites that are rubbish, or offensive or anything like that. It is meant to be just a free resource, and we're going to check if people are taking liberties. Thanks for drawing my attention for the need to make that clear.

Hey Becci,

There are several reasons why members of TP are not allowed to self-promote. The first - this site was designed as a place where members could visit to exchange travel information, ideas, recommendations, ask for help, offer advise and so forth because they want to share what they know - not because there will be personal gain from it. Secondly - allowing member self-promotion opens the door for spammers to infiltrate the site in larger and larger numbers. It also makes moderating a site the size of TP much more difficult. TP was designed to be an online travel community and not one big personalized advertisement. Members keep coming back because of the content they find here. Yes, links to other sites are made depending on the information. But, personal sites are listed through a user's profile and only visible after reaching a certain status. It's just one more way to keep the self-promotion to a minimum.

I understand what you are trying to do with your own site. I also understand what type of information you are requesting from TP members. But, considering this is the second time you have posted the request - the first being flagged as spam and deleted - I will let Admin. make the final decision about this.

Hi there
I didn't know my other thread had been removed. I didn't get an email.
I thought spamming and bad advertising etc was only if you posted URLS and email addresses, neither of which I did. I just asked for information as far as I can recall. I didn't know this was wrong - that is why I asked people to message me rather than put links in the thread. I don't see what I have done. Well, I won't do it again, that's for sure...

Hey Becci,

No, honestly, spamming comes in many different varieties. But, I agree that you have just asked for information and have done the right thing by asking for it via PMs and e-mail. Just a heads up for when your own site goes online - spammers will use any tactic they can to get what they want. You will be surprised! I know I was when I first encountered them on my own site. Good luck with your endeavor.

That's cool. I got IP blocking for my forum anyway so anyone who causes trouble on my site won't get very far that is for sure. And just to show I love TP, I can tell you I've already listed it on my site anyway. Thanks for wishing me good luck, and thank you for the advice.

Err, people can plug their sites here too. It's a simple case of following the instructions in our links directory. If it's a commercial site it may come at a small price, but sure, they can still plug their business on here if they really want to (and they are on topic).

I'll let this thread stay. Mind you, it would be a lot easier to just have a look at our links directory and review all the sites we've already reviewed. Then go to DMOZ and visit their 'travel' category for another million or so links. Should keep you busy for a loooong time.
