I would recommend Rhodes Island.
You can stay in Afandou (Afantou) Village, just 20 k/m away from Rhodes with its magnificent medieval town and 30 k/m from the picturesque traditional village of Lindos.
Afandou village was founded in the days when pirates were ravaging the Mediterranean. It is said that the village owes its name to the place where it was built. A place that was "afanto, afando" which in Greek means invisible from the sea.
Afandou is an attractive traditional Greek village surrounded by beautiful countryside. For a complete change of pace and scenery, the hectic resort of Faliraki is only a short distance away.
[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please... ]
The area of Omonia Square in Athens used to be rough but I believe it's somehwat cleaner now.
I can highly recommend a trip to Lindos on Rhodes, and also the island of Kos. It's quite close to Bodrum in Turkey so you can visit there also.
